micrel, i nc. mic826 february 4 , 2013 8 revision 1. 0 functional description design and product advantages the mic826 is a voltage supervisor reset ic wit h a manual reset input , watchdog input , and dual reset outputs . the mic826 assert s and hold s a reset when the supply volt age falls below the factory - programmed threshold voltage , when /mr is at low logic level , or when watchdog input times out . r eset is as se rted for a fixed reset timeout period after the supply voltage increases above the rising threshold voltage or when the manual reset input is asserted high . the mic826 features an active - low, push - pull reset output (/r eset ) and an active - high, push - pull reset output (r eset ). it also contains 52k pull - u p resistors on the /mr input to make it easy to connect to pushbutton inputs. the mic826 also feature s a watchdog (wdi) input. manual reset input (/mr ) the /mr input pin has integrated p ull - up resistors t o keep the current consumption l ow when the push button switch is pressed . reset output s (/r eset and reset ) the re are two reset outputs : /reset and reset . b oth outputs are push - pull , which eliminates the need for pull - up resistors. the reset output is the i nverse of the /reset output. asserting /r eset and r eset outputs when functioning a s a manual reset the reset outputs /r eset and r eset are asserted while the /mr pin is driven low. both reset outputs remain asserted for a factory - programmed reset timeout d elay time , t rp . the typical value of a reset timeout period is 200 ms . the /reset pin is driven low while the reset pin is driven high whenever /mr is pulled low. figure 3 . manual reset function when functioning a s a voltage supervisor the /reset pin is asserted whenever v cc falls below the reset threshold voltage , v rst (v cc < v rst ). the v cc pin circuitry includes hysteresis to prevent /r e s e t or reset pin chattering due to noise. t he /reset pin remains asserted for the duration of the reset timeout del ay ( t rp ) after v cc has risen above the reset threshold voltage plus the hysteresis . the reset function ensures that a microprocessor is properly reset and powers up in a known cond ition after a power failure. the /r e s e t remain s valid with v cc as low as 1 v. the reset output i s a comple ment of the / reset output. figure 4 . voltage supervisor function
micrel, i nc. mic826 february 4 , 2013 9 revision 1. 0 watchdog input the mic826 has an on - chip watch dog timer that can reset the microprocessor if it fails to strobe the wdi input within a preset timeout period (t wd ). if the wdi pin is left unconnected , this function is disabled. the watchdog timeout period starts when either of the reset outputs becomes inactive and either a high - to - low or low - to - high transition occurs before the watchdog timeout period (t wd ). if the watchdog timer times out , then the reset outputs will assert and stay asserted for a reset timeout period (t rp ). t he watchdog timer is also cleared whenever the reset out put s are asserted by /mr , or if vcc falls below v rst . t he watchdog timer starts again whenever the reset out put s are de - asserted. figure 5. watchdog timing watchdog input current the wdi input current is the current sourced or sinked by the wdi pin when the wdi input is driven low or high , respectively. the wdi input is design ed to drive a t ri - state output device with a 10 a maximum leakage current and a maximum capacitance of 200pf. v cc transient the mic826 is relatively immune to small negative - going v cc glitches below the reset threshold. as shown in figure 6 , the overdrive voltage is the difference between the threshold voltage and the minimum point of the v cc glitch. typically, an overdrive of 1 00mv with duration of 2 s or less will not cause a reset. figure 6 . v cc transient reset valid up - to vcc = 1 v the m ic826 is a supervisory circuit that monitors the power supply voltage level . i f the power supply voltage level falls below the factory - programmed threshold level , then the reset signals are asserted. the mic826 maintains the reset states with vcc as low as 1v. supply bypass capacitor an optional 0.1 f input bypass capacitor can be placed from vcc (pin 6) to gnd (pin 2) to increase glitch rejection.
